Ross Shrigley

Presentation topic:

Every year, Plant Select introduces a new collection of beautiful, waterwise and sustainable (for resilient) plants to garden centers and wholesale suppliers. Plants are trialed and tested for 3 years for perennials and 5 years or more for woodies at Denver Botanic Gardens, Colorado State University, and public and private gardens.

You might think the question of what constitutes a native plant would be easy to answer—but it’s little more complicated (and fascinating!) than you might imagine.  Ross Shrigley is the executive director of Plant Select®, the nation’s leading brand of plants designed specifically to thrive in the tough conditions of the high plains and intermountain regions.  Ross will consider the realm of native plants, the value they offer to the home gardener and what to consider when considering and choosing between a straight species native, a “nativar,” and a cultivar.  Plant Select has selections of 90+ plants native to North America, including 45+ Colorado natives and a variety of straight species native plants.  Ross will share examples of climate-ready natives, including trees.

Ross will also highlight the Plant Select introductions for 2024.  Every year, Plant Select introduces a new collection of beautiful, waterwise, and resilient plants to garden centers and wholesale suppliers. Plants are trialed and tested for 2-5 years at Denver Botanic Gardens, Colorado State University, and public and private gardens.
